Qualification/programme development

I have more than two decades' experience within the UK awarding sector, overseeing the rollout of high profile qualifications such as Functional Skills in England (and before that, Key Skills and the Adult Numeracy/Literacy national tests), Essential Skills NI, Essential Skills Wales and ESOL Skills for Life.

At various times I have been responsible for: commissioning and standardising assessments, designing specifications and handbooks, liaising with regulators and policymakers, project and portfolio management, developing business cases and value propositions, delivering training, organising networking events, building relationships with practitioners and programme leaders.

Policy advice, advocacy and diversity/equity/inclusion (DEI)

I've built relationships with policymakers and regulators throughout these islands, working on a number of high profile initiatives.

In various roles I have championed DEI, encouraging others to recognise latent and other privileges that might be counterproductive or harmful.

I've helped people and organisations based in England (but seeking to work elsewhere in the UK and beyond) recognise inadvertent use of Anglocentric discourses and assumptions.

I've worked extensively with advocacy organisations such as NATECLA and North West Migrants Forum.

I've previously been an election agent in both local government and Parliamentary (Westminster) elections.

Research

I've commissioned and carried out a range of quantitative and qualitative research projects.

I completed a Masters in 2023 that involved exploring experiences of ESOL tutors in Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can read my thesis here.

I strongly believe adult educators need to be reflexive in their practice, as well as taking an interest in action research. I also believe the sector needs to embrace the power of research as a means of demonstrating its transformative and emancipatory potential.
